A vivid video of a sea turtle with a plastic straw stuck in its’ nostril from the summer of 2018 has sparked many big eaterie companies to have a change of heart. Not only are eateries trying to save those cute little harmless shelled reptiles, companies such as Starbucks, the Hilton, and SeaWorld are planning on eliminating plastic straws altogether.

Whether it is selling reusable metal straws, creating plastic ‘adult sippy cups’, or distributing paper straws, many companies are working to save the turtles. But is drinking our coffee through a sippy cup lid, what four year olds use, the correct answer?

Numerous companies, like Starbucks, plan on producing plastic “sippy cup” lids as if every coffee consumer is a two year old learning to crawl. What’s next? Are we going to begin playing with Play-Doh and using diapers?

Although it’s horrific to have innocuous sea turtles suffer from humans’ foolishness, a recent study conducted by U.S. and Australian researchers from Statista has shown that the countries that produce a majority of the plastic debris in the ocean comes from China and Indonesia.  While the United States produces the least amount of debri. Taking away plastic straws won’t really have much of a beneficial effect because McDonald’s and most other eateries will continue to distribute plastic straws. There’s no way Congress would completely ban plastic straws- I mean there’s still mass shootings, why would plastic straws be prioritized first?

While I believe saving the turtles and many other animals and insects is very important, sippy cups are not the answer. Restaurants should begin using metal reusable straws because paper straws can still be harmful to the planet. I know I definitely don’t want to start acting like a toddler and use a sippy cup to drink my frappuccino when metal straws would be beneficial and a better option.
