Music of any kind can give an emotional response that triggers memories and actions that reveal a variety of personalities. Just as lyrics alter within intricate rhythms to complete verses of songs, they also reflect the curves life can throw at people in order to fulfill their goals. Gwen Hardy, junior, has been pursuing her career in music for the past three years through different social outlets such as Instagram, Youtube, and Soundcloud.

“I have always been surrounded by music my whole life,” said Hardy. Within her family, there are many musically inclined people that play different instruments. Once Hardy wanted to pursue music as a realistic career; however, most of her family began ridiculing her for doing so which pushed her to discover her own passion as a true artist.

“My first performance was for the talent show my freshman year when I played my first original song for people,” said Hardy. The name of the song she performed was ‘Blue Skies’ and it was about having a positive outlook on life even when there are unwanted pressures surrounding people. The positive feedback she received from that night made her more determined to pursue her passion.

“I wanted to be able to have a platform where I could share my music freely, so Soundcloud was the best option,” stated Hardy. The first single she released was called ‘First Time Feelings’ which was about the emotional hardships she felt with one of her exes. As the song surfaced to different users across the world, it gained more popularity receiving 21,000 plays. In the hopes of releasing an ep, Hardy began producing more singles.

“When I begin writing a song, I start with a feeling and describe that feeling with words that point me in the direction that I want to take a song,” expressed Hardy. The next two songs she wrote, ‘Loved You Enough’ and ‘Come Down’, portrayed new styles in her musicality as to not make her music follow the same transitions/chords as other songs of today. ‘Loved You Enough’ has been released for nine months and has surpassed ‘First Time Feelings’ with 45,000 plays worldwide. When producing music, Hardy’s prefers doing so in Los Angeles because there she can record her songs in a studio giving her songs a professional quality.

“In L.A. I have more freedom with my music and get to experiment with different vocal backgrounds that give my songs it’s own style,” stated Hardy. In the recording studio, there are amps and several playback mics which all aide in composing her songs. In one recording session, she played a live studio version at the Recordium of two songs titled ‘Relapse’ and ‘Midnight Wishes’ which can both be played on her Youtube account as well on Soundcloud.

“I’m also my own manager, so I’ve been trying to book shows around town,” commented Hardy. The places she is currently trying to perform are First Fridays held at the art district and The Culinary Dropout. The process to perform at venues takes a lot of time and effort which include having a musical resume of background experience with banners and photos of an artist’s work. When Hardy begins performing in the Las Vegas Valley she will be performing cover songs and a few of her favorite originals.

“I hope to someday make it in the industry and prove to people that music is worth pursuing even if the odds might seem against me,” said Hardy.
