The Desert Oasis Speech and Debate team had a recent tournament at Arizona State University. Schools from all over went to Arizona to compete in one of the toughest competitions they have had yet.

Out of the 11 members from Desert Oasis, sophomore Taliyah Halsell competed in an event called oratory, and made it to the quarter final round. Taliyah beat out about 75 kids in the quarter finals and placed 25th, which sadly excluded her from participating in the semi final rounds.

“When I placed 25th, I was sparked with joy because it’s not just like me giving out the speech, it’s my whole team. I wouldn’t be able to be here without them and their encouragement,” Halsell says.

Members of the Speech and Debate team say, without each others support, they wouldn’t be the great team they are today. The team is hoping the next tournament they attend to will be better than the last, but all they can do is just hope for the best.
